The Institute of Development and Aging Sciences

The Institute of Development and Aging Sciences, founded in 1954, is a component of Nippon Medical School, and is a nonprofit medical research organization. It was originally launched as a research center for gerontology, but currently its area of research has expanded to other life science areas, from the molecular and cellular level to individuals. The mission of the institute is to contribute to the human health and dreams through biomedical sciences.

How to reach Institute of Development and Aging Sciences: The institute is located in the Nippon Medical School Musashi Kosugi Hospital in Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Japan. It can be easily reached by 3 minutes walk from Musashi-Kosugi station on Tokyu-Toyoko line, Meguro line, JR Yokosuka line or JR Nanbu line.

The Research Institute of Vaccine Therapy for Tumors and Infectious Diseases


maruyamaThe late Dr. Chisato Maruyama, a professor emeritus at NMS, founded the research institute that focuses on treating and preventing cancer through cancer immunotherapy. ‘Maruyama vaccine’ consists of solid extract of SSM (specific substance Maruyama) and human tuberculosis spores. By using this vaccine, the institute has treated more than 350,000 cancer patients since 1964. Currently, the Maruyama vaccine is referred to as an “investigational new drug”, and the number of doctors participating in clinical trials has reached over 21,000.

Nippon Medical School Medical Examination Center

Nippon Medical School Medical Examination Center The medical examination center, established in 2006, provides researchers with the most advanced clinical imaging equipment, such as PET-CTs and MRIs. By using these leading-edge medical systems, researchers mainly in the field of nuclear medicine and psychiatric medicine research on detecting early-stage cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. The facility also utilizes PET (whole body PET, brain PET, and head MRI) for medical checkups, such as early cancer screening.
