Department of Gastroenterological Medicine

Department of Gastroenterological Medicine diagnoses and treats diseases in a wide region of the body, including the upper gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, duodenum), the lower gastrointestinal tract (small intestine, large intestine), and the pancreas. We provide the best possible care based on our philosophy that medical care should be provided with an understanding of the patient’s situation and perspective. As physicians, we work hard every day in order to learn the most recent, most advanced techniques.

Clinical practice in each area of specialization is guided by specialized physicians with qualifications from relevant medical societies such as the Japan Gastroenterology Society, Japan Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Society, or the Japan Society of Hepatology. Diagnosis is based on scientific evidence, and in addition to diagnosis and treatment in our clinic, we also offer the most advanced diagnostic and treatment options available at a university hospital. We coordinate closely with the related departments in the hospital as necessary. In addition, because a full-time physician is assigned to the endoscope center, our department can also always provide treatment quickly in urgent cases such as gastrointestinal bleeding.

Esophagus Group

The esophagus group provides excellent care for conditions such as reflux esophagitis, non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux (NERD), and drug-resistant heartburn. We are particularly skilled at treating achalasia (a swallowing disorder). We endeavor to provide medical care of patient symptoms such as heartburn, chest discomfort, or sour taste based on the underlying conditions. In addition, we are capable of performing reliable diagnostic surgery for esophageal cancer and can provide the best treatments in cooperation with the surgical and radiology departments.

Gastroduodenal Group

The gastroduodenal group engages in a wide variety of treatments and research on many disorders such as helicobacter pylori infection and chronic gastritis, functional dyspepsia (FD), peptic ulcers, medical treatment of bleeding peptic ulcers, endoscopic hemostasis surgery for ulcers, endoscopic mucosal resections to treat gastric cancers (mainly endoscopic submucosal dissection), and gastrointestinal cancer chemotherapy.

Large and Small Intestines Group

The intestines group is responsible for the portion of the digestive tract from the small intestine to the rectum. We have introduced the use of capsule endoscopes and double-balloon endoscopes for examinations of the small intestine. In the large intestine, we perform treatments such as resection of colon polyps, endoscope treatments such as mucosal resections or submucosal dissection (ESD) for early colon cancers, and various treatments for inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

Liver, Gallbladder, and Pancreas Group

This group treats all of the diseases related to the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
